Bilingual-Bicultural M.Ed. Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Bilingual-Bicultural program prepares students to become classroom teachers serving Deaf children using American Sign Language (ASL).  The program focuses on a “difference” rather than “disability” model and uses total immersion of ASL.  Students participate in coursework, lab opportunities, practicum and student teaching.  The culminating student teaching experience allows students the opportunity to implement many of the methods, strategies and techniques they have learned during their program.  Students are placed as student teachers in high-quality schools for the Deaf across the country.

The program is designed to be completed in two-years* (4 semesters).   Students completing this program apply for licensure through the Utah State Board of Education as teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing. Graduates also meet the requirements for certification by the Council on Education of the Deaf.  This program is a participant in the Western Regional Graduate Exchange program (WRGP) allowing eligible students from participating states to pay resident tuition.

*Students completing the USU composite Bachelors degree in Elementary Education/Deaf Education may complete the MEd requirements in one year.
